Since the pipes have a nuanced acoustic response to changes in air pressure and flow, and transition between open-ended pipes (above water) to detuned close pipes (within water), they sonify their physical relation to the water and raft. Adjusting their arrangement on the raft is a sort of physical programming. But it's really in the situatedness with and in the river that the music emerges. From the moment the raft is released, the river takes over, pulling and sinking, and the music just happens, piping as the raft bobs with the current and ripples on the surface, composing the music and uncomposing themselves. These moments of letting go and listening created a sense of togetherness with the river.

During my residency at the Maaswachter’s studio, next to a sometimes quite turbulent section of the Maas, my music making attempts were more shore-based.
